LEARN –TO- SWIM YOUTH AQUATICS

6 – 14 years

 

The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim classes provide instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience while learning aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach children  to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water. Pick-up a brochure on swimming levels and prerequisites at the Illinois Valley YMCA. Must be the required age at the starting date of the class. MIN/MAX: 3/10 PER TIME. MIN/MAX: 3 / 12 PER CLASS TIME.

 

 

 

 

LEVEL I:

Introduction to Water Skills (30 min)

PREREQUISITE: None
 

PURPOSE: To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely

 


 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Basic water safety rules

  • Using a lifejacket

  • Submerging mouth, nose & eyes

  • Opening eyes underwater & picking up submerged object

  • Swimming on front & back using arm & leg actions

  • Exhaling underwater

  • Floating on front & back

  • Getting help in an emergency

Level I-VI Fee:

LEVEL II:

 Fundamental Aquatic Skills (30 min)

PREREQUISITE: American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level 1

 

PURPOSE:  To provide student with opportunities for success with fundamental skills

 

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Moving in the water while wearing a lifejacket

  • Submerging entire head

  • Front & Back glide

  • Treading in chest deep  water using arm & leg motions

  • Comfortable floating with face in the water

  • Introduction to rotary (side) breathing

  • EXIT SKILL 1

    Step from pool side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll over to a back float, return to standing position, then move into a back float for 5 seconds and return to a standing position.

  • Bobbing in water

  • Jellyfish float

  • Swimming using combined stroke on front & back

  • Getting help in an emergency

  • Introduction to sidestroke arm and leg actions

  • EXIT SKILL 2

    Push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg movements for15 feet on the front, push off and swim using a combination of arm movement for 15 feet on the back.

LEVEL III:

Stroke Development (30 Min)

PREREQUISITE: American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 2:Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate or demonstrate all

completion requirements in Level 2.

 

PURPOSE:  To build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Reaching assist

  • Submerging & retrieving an object

  • Front & back glide

  • Front & back crawl -15 FT

  • EXIT SKILL

    Jump into chest-deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing pattern (to side), maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim back crawl for 15 yards

  • Kneeling or standing dive (shallow dive progression)

  • Rotary breathing in horizontal position

  • Survival float, back float

  • Butterfly-kick & body motion 15 FT

  • Tread in deep water- 30 seconds

  • Deep water back float/survival float

  • Intermediate lifejacket skills

LEVEL IV:

Stroke Improvement (30 MIN)

 

PREREQUISITE: American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 3: Stroke Development certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level 3.

 

PURPOSE:  To build student confidence and performance of the swimming strokes learned in Level 3 by providing additional guided practice

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Safe diving rules

  • Dive from stride position or shallow dive

  • Survival float, back float in deep water- 1 min.

  • Open turns on front and back

  • Elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly- 15 YDS

  • EXIT SKILL 1:
    Perform a feet-first entry into chest-deep water, swim

    front crawl for 25 yards, maintain position on back 1

    minute in deep water (float or sculling), and swim

    elementary backstroke for 15 yards.

  • Throwing assist

  • Tread in deep water- 1 min.

  • Feet-first surface dive

  • Front & back crawl -25 YDS

  • Swim on side with scissors kick- 15 YDS

  • Advanced lifejacket skills

  • Introduction to diving

  • EXIT SKILL 2:
    Swim breaststroke 15 yards, tread water for 1

    minute, swim back crawl 25 yards.

LEVEL V: (30 min)

Stroke Refinement

PREREQUISITE: American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4: Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level 4.

 

PURPOSE:  To build on the skills in Level 4 by providing additional guided practice

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Survival swimming- 2 MINUTES

  • Standing dive (diving progression)

  • Open turns on front & back

  • Flip turns on front & back

  • Front & back crawl- 50 YARDS EACH

  • EXIT SKILL 1
    Perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl 50 yards, maintain a back float position for 2 minutes in deep water (float or scull) and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.

  • Performing rescue breathing

  • Tuck & pick surface dive

  • Swim underwater 15 YARDS

  • Tread in deep water- 2 minutes

  • Front flip turn & backstroke flip turn

  • Elementary backstroke, butterfly- 25 YARDS EACH

  • Breaststroke, sidestroke- 25 YARDS EACH

  • EXIT SKILL 2
    Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and swim back crawl for 50 yards.

LEVEL VI: (30 min)

Swimming and Skill Proficiency Fitness Swimming

PREREQUISITE: American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4: Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level 4.

 

PURPOSE:  To build on the skills in Level 4 by providing additional guided practice

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Refine the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate on swim teams and in more advanced course such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. The options the Illinois Valley YMCA offers include:
