ILLINOIS VALLEY YMCA PROFESSIONAL

LIFEGUARDS & SUPERVISORS

The lifeguard staff is trained under the top international aquatics safety program, Jeff Ellis & Associates. Ellis is known throughout the nation as running the top national water safety program. Included in this 20 hour training course are lifeguard rescue skills, emergency procedures and situations, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, emergency oxygen administration, automated external defibrillation or AED training, and First Aid. Pre-requirements to the training include swimming 200 yards, retrieving a brick out of 12 feet of water and treading water for one minute with hands exposed. Throughout the year our lifeguards are required to attend in-service training sessions every week and practice their skills every day before they begin work. Throughout the year auditors from Ellis & Associates will conduct unannounced visits to test the performance of the lifeguards. Mock rescues initiated by management throughout the year also help to keep our staff rescue ready for any aquatic emergency.

ILLINOIS VALLEY YMCA

WATER SAFETY AND SWIM INSTRUCTION STAFF

Join the YMCA Water Safety & Swim Instruction Staff and be apart of over 100 years of quality swimming and water safety instruction. A swim lesson instructor at the Illinois Valley YMCA is responsible for assuring the safety, well-being and creating a fun and educational environment of all participants in his/her class(es). The instructor follows all of the classes’ guidelines and make sure every individual receives attention and coaching during the class period. Small class sizes and 30 to 45 minutes of instruction time per class allow for the instructor to teach students skills ranging from introduction to swimming to basic water safety skills. Teaching swimming at the Illinois Valley YMCA is also a great beginning career opportunity that can give you excellent leadership experience.
