CELEBRATE NATIONAL AQUATIC SAFETY MONTH AT THE

YMCA SPLASHTACULAR 2007

MAY 19 -25, 2007

Mission Statement: To promote aquatic education to all people using a collaborative effort of sources for activities, information sharing, and community involvement.

Statistically, waterparks are the safest place for families to have fun in the water. Compared to other recreational aquatic facilities—both guarded and unguarded, including community pools, beaches, lakes, etc.—waterparks have the lowest risk of danger from drowning. Despite the industry's exemplary level of safety, the Illinois Valley YMCA considers it a priority to educate the public about the potential risks to help lessen all possibilities of drowning under any circumstances. That's because, unfortunately, drownings continue to be the result of lack of knowledge regarding safe water practices. Some of the activities and events for the YMCA Splashtacular 2007 are:

-          Free water safety classes for youth and adults.

-          Water Safety Coloring Contest for ages 14 & under: WIN FREE SWIM LESSONS

-          Free Y-Member daily water games & contests at the aquatic center.

-          Lifeguard Carwash

-          Much, Much, More!

Be water-wise before summer starts and participate with your family and friends in the numerous free activities and events for May 2007. Visit the courtesy counter at the entrance to the YMCA or online at: www.ivymca/com/aquatics.htm for an up-to-date schedule for this fun and exciting water safety week.

NEW AQUATIC CENTER SCHEDULE

A friendly reminder that the Link Aquatic Center schedule will be modified this summer season for aquatic programs and open swims. Pick-up a current schedule at the courtesy counter at the entrance of the Illinois Valley YMCA or visit us on the web at: http://www.ivymca.com/aquaticsched.htm

Note: The Link Aquatic Center hours of operation vary from the Illinois Valley YMCA hours of operation. Portions of the Link Aquatic Center maybe closed or shared with other YMCA or IVCH programs. Schedule is subject to change without notice.

BRING YOUR GROUP FOR A DIP IN OUR POOL!

The Illinois Valley YMCA’s indoor aquatic center is available for private rental by groups or organizations. Plan a pool party for a group of school children or teens, arrange an exercise class for adults, or offer a swimming class to a group of homeschoolers. We’ll provide the pool and the staff; you provide the swimmers! To reserve the pool for a one-time or ongoing private group event or for additional information about rates and available times, contact Kristi Brewer at 815-223-7904 x11 or e-mail k_brewer@insightbb.com

Can’t make it to the lifeguard, or CPR classes
                          at the Illinois Valley  YMCA?

Try training at your own pace for CPR, First-aid, AED, bloodborne pathogens and lifeguarding online at: http://www.ecsinstitute.org/courses/

The final practical examination can be completed at the YMCA. Call Kristi Brewer, Aquatic Director, to schedule an appointment. 815-223-7904 ext. 11

UNDERWATER EGG HUNT SUCCESS!

Over 70 YMCA Members and guests celebrated Easter in a unique way this year. On March 24, Easter Bunny visited the Illinois Valley YMCA early while children ages 0-10 years searched the depths of our heated Family Fun Waterpark for colorful floating and sunken eggs with a special prize inside. 800 eggs were used in this year’s event. Thank you for making this aquatic program such a success!

AQUATIC PROGRAM REGISTRATION REMINDER

All members and guests are advised that many programs and events have limited availability and registration is accepted on a first come first serve basis. To better serve our members and guests, it is highly recommended that members and guests register for aquatic programs in a timely manner. Keep in mind for class organization, proper placement of participants, ordering of supplies must be taken into consideration to offer excellent service and quality programs in aquatics. Some programs have a registration deadline of at least two days prior to the start of the class or event, especially swimming lessons. For example members and guests can register in March for a program that begins in April. Keep in mind that payment at the time of registration is also required for all aquatic programs and events. The Illinois Valley YMCA is more than happy to accommodate payment options or assist members and guests with scholarship information for all programs and events.
